Separating from my partner

No one makes the decision to leave a relationship or marriage lightly and separation is never easy. We're here to help.

If your relationship is over and you are thinking about separating from your partner (or have already done so), there are a lot of things to consider and agree with your ex-partner, including:

  • when should you tell them?
  • can you stay in your home?
  • what happens to your children?
  • how will you re-organise your financial arrangements?
  • how should you divide the things you own together?

You can learn more about what is involved by reading our "Helpful Guide to Successfully Navigating Separation and Divorce".

How we help

Over the last 50 years, we have successfully guided and supported hundreds of people living and working in Melbourne's northern suburbs through this (sometimes very painful) process and out the other side.

1. Pre-separation advice

Before you separate from your partner, it can be very helpful to sit down with an experienced family lawyer to understand your likely entitlements and obligations.  We will also help you put together a plan for financial arrangements, child custody and living arrangements.

2. Negotiating separation

Once you have separated, it's the job of our family law team to help you negotiate agreements about child arrangements and child support, spousal maintenance payments and dividing your assets with your ex-partner and/or their lawyer.

3. Dealing with family violence

Sometime, our clients consider separating or separate because they are experiencing family violence. This situation requires very careful handling, and our experienced team has extensive experience helping our clients deal with domestic violence, including applying for a Family Violence Intervention Order (IVO).

We can also advise you on what to do if you have been served with an IVO. Deciding how to respond is a very serious matter, and the choices you make have lasting consequences.

Our firm values openness, collaboration and integrity.

We make sure you understand what your options are, what you need to do, what will happen next and what our services will cost at every step of the journey.

That’s why our clients choose us for this important work. And why you should too!
